BDIAP and IAP

The British Division of the International Academy of Pathology is one of the larger divisions of the IAP (after the
US-Canadian and some others) and is a ‘big hitter’ on the world stage. This is due, in large measure, to the activities of previous Presidents of the BDIAP, especially Kristin Henry and Claude Cuvelier.

The BDIAP was the first to establish schools of pathology, initially with the Arab Division and later with Sri Lanka, East, Central and Southern Africa, and Bosnia (now the Bryan Warren School, named for another great contributor to our international activities). There have been three BDIAP Presidents of the IAP in George Cunningham, the founding father of the BDIAP, Roger Cotton, the founding Editor of Histopathology, and Kristin Henry. We have also contributed to the IAP in having one of the European Vice-Presidents from the division, most recently Claude Cuvelier who has recently retired from the role. His many connections in Europe and around the world including Cuba and Cambodia allowed him to influence the global activities of the IAP positively over many years. He has been succeeded as European Vice President by Philippe Camparo from the French Division, who will surely have the proverbial ‘hard act to follow’. Thank you, Claude, for all you have done not just for the British Division but the IAP worldwide.

The BDIAP has delivered the IAP Congress in modern times on three occasions: in Dublin in 1988, Amsterdam in 2002 and in Glasgow (virtually) in 2020. It has also provided speakers and contributed to organisation of many more Congresses. The next Congress is scheduled for Sydney in October 2022 (currently being planned as a hybrid meeting, pandemic permitting). Being a member of the BDIAP indicates membership of the wider IAP and allows reduced registration for other IAP division activities and reduced subscription rates for other division journals, such as the USCAP’s Modern Pathology and Laboratory Investigation. There is still BDIAP representation in the Central IAP with Mary Leader continuing as a member of the influential Education Committee, now chaired by Ghazi Zaatari from Lebanon but initially established by Kristin Henry.

The Secretary of the IAP is Ray McMahon, previously Treasurer and President of the BDIAP, and IAP Secretary since 2014. He will continue to represent the BDIAP at the IAP Executive level and report back to the BDIAP Council. It is important that the BDIAP maintains its profile on the world stage and continues its close involvement with the Central IAP at its highest levels. You can follow IAP’s activities at www.iapcentral.org and on social media on Twitter @IAPCentral.
