I hope you have had a good summer and enjoyed your holidays if you managed to get away.
I’d like to welcome the new members of the BDIAP, in particular our new cohort of ST1s and other new pathology trainees across the member countries. The BDIAP is here to help you through what I hope will be a long and happy career in pathology!
For our senior members with new trainees, please don’t forget to point them in the direction of our website, and encourage them to join.
BDIAP Meetings
Liverpool Pathology 2023
For the BDIAP, the summer started with our first in person joint meeting with the Pathological Society of GB & Ireland since pre-Covid. Liverpool Pathology 2023 was a well attended and highly successful meeting. All appreciated this opportunity to meet old friends, attend outstanding symposia, present their work and network. It was particularly good to see the enthusiasm of our trainee members – for many this was their first major pathology congress.
I would like to thank all the convenors and speakers for making it such a successful meeting. A highlight was Dan Berney’s Kristin Henry Lecture ‘The Divine Comedy of Prostate Cancer: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise‘.
Particular thanks should go to the main meeting organisers, Jan von der Thüsen for the BDIAP, Heike Grabsch for the Pathological Society and Sarah Coupland, local organiser, and also our administration team, Sam Kiely, Louisa Coulthurst, Lydia Ivnik and Joanna White.
Congratulations to the BDIAP Liverpool Pathology bursary recipients and poster prize winners!
The BDIAP Symposium on Lower GI Pathology is taking place on 10-11 November 2023 in London. Thanks to Professors Manuel Rodriguez-Justo and Marco Novelli for putting together an excellent programme.
Also, please note the networking reception will be held at the end of the programme on the Friday. This was introduced for the first time at the 2022 meeting and is an opportunity to interact with the speakers and pathologists from other centres.
View programme and register early.
Study Days 4-5 March 2024
The 9th BDIAP Molecular Pathology Study Day will be held on Monday 4 March 2024, providing attendees with theoretical knowledge of molecular pathology and how to interpret the results, delivering expertise that can be applied to daily practice! The day is filled with interactive talks and case discussions, aimed at histopathologists (trainees, specialty doctors and consultants) but is also suitable for allied scientists who may want to learn more about the use of molecular pathology.

The 16th BDIAP Approach to Cut-up Study Day will be held on Tuesday 5 March 2024, and provides an opportunity for attendees to learn more about how to tackle the wide mix of different specimens that will be encountered in different departments! Histopathology trainees or allied scientists, at all stages of training, are very welcome!

BDIAP Bursaries
NEW! A new online bursary system will be launched this year. This will make applying for, and managing, bursaries easier for members.
This year we launched the Innovation Grants for BDIAP Member Country Members. These are intended to assist members study in other departments of Histopathology /Molecular Pathology. The aim is that the recipient of a grant should learn about specialist pathological techniques that are not available at their own institution or pursue an area of sub-specialisation at a specialist centre. The grants are directed at trainees in their final year of training. 6 Innovation Grants will be provided each year with a maximum value of each grant of £5,000.
