In my first Newsletter of 2024, I would like to start by welcoming all our new BDIAP members. For the first time we have over 1,400 members, coming from 31 countries around the world.

It is a pleasure to welcome incoming Councillors: Dr Nils ‘t Hart, our new Dutch Representative replacing Dr Jan von der Thüsen who is President Elect, Dr Mai Kelleher (Trainee Councillor), and Mary Mc Elroy (Allied Scientist Representative).

I would like to congratulate the 2023 BDIAP medal recipients: Prof Dan Berney, Cunningham Medal, and Prof Andrew Nicholson, President’s Medal.

Past Meetings

It has been a busy few months of meetings since my last Newsletter.

In September 2023, the BDIAP attended the IBMS Congress. Further collaboration between our Societies is planned with Joint BDIAP/IBMS sessions at our annual meetings.

In October 2023, Prof Mike Osborn represented the BDIAP and RCPath at the meeting of the Hong Kong Division of the IAP.

The Bryan Warren School of Pathology (4-5 November) was a great success. Many thanks to Dr Lisa Browning and Dr Murali Varma for providing a great Uropathology programme.

The BDIAP Symposium on Lower GI Pathology (10-11 November) was an excellent meeting, with over 170 attendees including 7 bursary recipients. I would like to thank all our speakers and in particular Professors Marco Novelli and Manuel Rodriguez-Justo for putting together the programme.

Upcoming Meetings

This summer’s BDIAP Symposium, takes place 9-10 May at the Royal College of Pathologists, London.
This summer’s BDIAP Symposium, takes place 9-10 May at the Royal College of Pathologists, London. 

This is a 2-day meeting; on the first day there is a Joint BDIAP RCPath Dermatopathology Update which includes discussion of the recent 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Skin Tumours. On the second day is a Joint BDIAP/BLPG Symposium on Skin Lymphomas. The afternoon programme includes case-based workshops and the Haematopathology EQA meeting. A networking reception will take place on Thursday 9 May for all registered delegates.

A BDIAP sponsored symposium on Molecular Diagnostics will take place at the Dutch Pathology Week taking place 11-12 April. More information here.

Abstract submission is now open and BDIAP bursaries are available for Trainees and Allied Scientists. 

Bursaries are also available for BDIAP Schools and applicants from Bosnia for the Nermin Durakovic bursary. Applicants should apply via the Central IAP.

BDIAP Study Days 2024

The 9th Molecular Pathology and 16th Approach to Cut-Up  Study days, organised by  Dr Lisa Browning and Dr Matt Clarke, take place next month (4-5 March) at 10 Union Street. Places are still available.


BDIAP Bitesize Virtual Workshops

The Bitesize Virtual Workshops, organised by Dr Abhi Ghosh, continue to be very popular. The November 2023 workshop delivered by Prof Aurelie Fabre, the histopathology of rare parenchymal lung diseases, is available to view on the members section of the BDIAP website along with previous workshops.  

The next workshop, Selected Cases in Head and Neck Pathology, was delivered by Dr Ann Sandison on 26 January 2024 to a full virtual audience. Do look out for other upcoming Bitesize workshops.

BDIAP Schools 2024

The 15th East African British School of Pathology will take place on 22-23 February 2024 in Arusha, Tanzania. The topic is Infectious Diseases of the GI tract and Liver. The BDIAP Faculty is Professor Sebastian Lucas, Dr Alberto Guaglia and Dr Ula Mahadeva.

Updated ICCR Datasets


The ICCR has advised the IAP of recently updated datasets as well as inviting the IAP to participate in the review process for a draft dataset 2nd edition International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR) Tumours of the Central Nervous System (CNS). More information can be found here


Finally, I would like to acknowledge the huge contributions to pathology education in the UK made by Prof Naveena Singh and Prof Kim Suvarna who sadly died recently. They will both be greatly missed.
